Opening reception Thursday February 27 from 5 to 8 pm

What importance does the motif hold in contemporary painting? Viktor Kopp has for more than fifteen years twisted and turned the conditions of figuration in his works. From paintings dealing with illusionistic space, via large canvases where figurative elements float freely in relation to each other, to paintings where the subject completely coincides with the painting – such as his well known series depicting chocolate. The chocolate motif was painted abstractly within the boundaries of the figurative. In his new paintings, he pushes the limits of precisely that, as if he’s about to paint the subject away. The near monochrome works contain a spatial perspective as a starting point, but gradually as the painting develops, focus shifts to the action on the surface of the canvas.

Paul Osipow’s work Ricochet (1997-99) address the same questions about the practise of painting and the subject’s plight, but the method can be described as Kopp’s opposite. Rather than starting from a spatial perspective it is based on abstract gestures, geometric fragments and fields of colour. However these elements do not fulfil their roles of being abstractions, instead they seem to portray the abstract and in addition, due to their overall composition, create a spatial landscape. The work becomes a figurative painting that largely describes painting. Osipow’s breakthrough came in 1965 with the painting Kolari, today regarded as one of the most important works of Nordic pop art. In 1969 he had his first solo exhibition in Helsinki with paintings related to pop while pointing toward a more dissolved and abstract idiom. Since then, Osipow has maintained an exemplary impure approach to concepts such as the abstract and figurative, to what and how to paint.

In Osipow’s work L’ antica Roma (2002-2004), it looks as if paintings are piled high, with their surfaces hidden from the viewer. The canvases take the shape of building blocks and the painterly practice can be interpreted as an architectural ruin or a vanitas still life – a motif. As in Kopp’s works and also in Ricochet the motif is tried in relation to the creative, painterly act. With pragmatic distance and profound seriousness the two artists stretch and toy within their artistic practise and play with painting’s eternal questions regarding surface, colour, space and form, to depict or not, thus creating intriguing artworks as well as contributing to an analytical criticism of their medium. The exhibition – which includes new works by Kopp and selected works by Osipow from the past 15 years – emerges into a dynamic dialogue as to the potential of the painted work, between the two artists coming from different generations and with diverse backgrounds.

Viktor Kopp (b. 1971 in Stockholm), exhibits for the first time at Galleri Riis. Previous exhibitions include Galleri Magnus Åklundh, Malmö, 2011, Stéphane Ribordy Contemporary Art, Geneva, 2012, Bureau, New York, 2012, and Passagen Linköpings Konsthall, Linköping, 2013. He participated in the Moderna Exhibition, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Solid-State, Bureau, New York, 2010, Edstranska: Viktor Kopp, Sirous Namazi, Lisa Jeannin and Lovisa Ring Borg, Malmö Art Academy, Malmö, 2012. Currently he holds an IASPIS scholarship in New York.

Paul Osipow´s (b. 1939 in Kotka, Finland) collaboration with Galleri Riis goes back to 1988 but this is his first exhibition in the Stockholm gallery. In 2005 Osipow was shown in a major exhibition and publication at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo and in an extensive retrospective at the Amos Anderson Art Museum in Helsinki 2007. His latest solo exhibition in Stockholm was at Galerie Aronowitsch in 2001. Osipow is represented in private and public collections throughout the Nordic region, f.ex the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo and the National Art Museum in Helsinki. He lives and works in Helsinki.

Vernissage torsdag 27 februari klockan 17-20

Vilken roll spelar motivet i samtida måleri?
