Three apples. Five carrots.
Cups, books, a rumpled tablecloth.

The room is dark, the valley green, the apple yellow.

You wanted to say something about death from the vantage point of middle-age, and how photography as process and practice mirrors all this.

A text accompanying Andenæs’ 7th solo exhibition with the gallery opens with the lines above. The space around the chair picks up where Child smiled. Blank stares from 2021 left off. The chair which was the subject of a photograph in that exhibition has now become a literal image, a presence despite it being absent in the space. The photographic works on display depict landscapes and still lifes, faces, objects, animals and spaces, and even though the world Andenæs presents us with is familiar, there is nothing ordinary about it.

Light is the precondition for any photograph, and in The space around the chair, its role is more explicit than earlier. In one part of the gallery the works are characterized by a flat, institutional light that lends a sense of immanence to the images. This somewhat reticent light that seems to emanate from within is markedly different than the more textured, sacred quality of light prevalent in the gallery’s other space. The images are demarcated by light and shadow, bearing witness to the daily cycle of the home and hinting at the space that exists beyond the picture frame, or chair, if you will.

Morten Andenæs (b. 1979) lives and works in Oslo, Norway, and received his BFA from The School of Visual Arts in New York City. For more than a decade his concise, poetic imagery and literary texts on images and their place in the culture at large has made an impact on the Norwegian photography scene. Andenæs’ work investigates the role of images on how we view the world and ourselves, and his dense photographs of people, animals, landscapes and objects hint to our fantasies, longings and desires. In addition to his numerous exhibitions over the past decade and a half, he has published two photobooks, Skyldfolk (2013) and We live in the house across the street (2021), a novel, Du, jeg, og Erik (2019) in addition to numerous articles and a book on contemporary photography. In 2019 he held his largest solo-exhibition to date at Kunstnernes Hus, titled I remind me of you. Morten Andenæs’ work is represented in numerous public collections like The National Museum, Henie Onstad Art Centre and Oslo Municipality.

Planten på benken er døende, ansiktet til jenta er skjult i flaten. Du skulle si noe om døden fra der du befinner deg nå, midt i livet.
Kanskje også noe om hvordan fotografiet, som erfaring og prosess speiler alt dette?

Slik innleder Morten Andenæs en tekst han har skrevet til sin 7. separatutstilling ved Galleriet. Rommet rundt stolen tar opp tråden der Child smiled. Blank stares fra 2021 slapp. Stolen som den gang var et fotografisk motiv er i denne omgang kun et språklig bilde, en tilstedeværelse i kraft av sitt fravær i rommet. Fotografier av landskap og stilleben, ansikter, objekter, dyr og rom henger side om side, og selv om verden Andenæs presenterer for oss er familiær er arbeidene langt ifra hverdagslige.

I Rommet rundt stolen har lyset, fotografiets eksistensgrunnlag, fått en mer eksplisitt rolle enn tidligere. I galleriets ene del er arbeidene preget av et iboende, jevnt og institusjonelt lys. Dette innadvendte og nær sagt immanente står i kontrast til det merkbart skarpere lyset i galleriets andre avdeling. Her deles bildeflatene inn i lys og skygge partier av et stofflig, nærmest sakralt lys som vitner om døgnets syklus i hjemmet og peker på rommet som eksisterer hinsides bilderammen, eller stolen, om man vil.

Morten Andenæs (f. 1979) har sin kunstneriske utdannelse fra School of Visual Arts i New York City, og bor og arbeider i Oslo. I løpet av det siste tiåret har han satt et tydelig preg på norsk fotografi med sine konsise og poetiske bilder og litterære tekster om fotografiet og dets plass i kulturen for øvrig. Andenæs er opptatt av hvilken rolle fotografier har i å forme våre blikk på verden og oss selv og med fortettete bilder av mennesker, dyr, landskap og gjenstander skaper han verk som viser til våre fantasier, lengsler og begjær. I tillegg til en omfattende utstillingsaktivitet det siste tiåret, har han utgitt fotobøkene Skyldfolk i 2013, We live in the house across the street 2021 og romanen Du, jeg og Erik i 2019, samt publisert en bok og flere artikler om fotografi. I 2019 viste han sin hittil største separatutstilling, I remind me of you, på Kunstnernes Hus i Oslo. Morten Andenæs er representert i flere offentlige samlinger, som Nasjonalmuseet, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter og Oslo Kommunes Kunstsamlinger.
